Volunteer update October 11th – opportunities from Our Union Street, Autism & Neurodiversity – North Scotland and Charlie House

Here are three of the latest opportunities from Volunteer Aberdeen to help you make a difference and get more involved with your community.

Give your time and help clean up our city’s Union Street with community-led organisation Our Union Street; champion Autism & Neurodiversity – North Scotland’s services including their new Binky the Sensory Bus as an Event Volunteer; or get into the festive spirit and make a difference to children and families this winter as a Volunteer Christmas Elf with Charlie House.

No matter what your interests, skills, age, experience or availability are, there’s a volunteering opportunity suited to you!

There really is no better way to get involved with your community than to give your time and share your skills with your city’s third sector and community organisations. And, if these opportunities don’t suit your interests, don’t worry. There are hundreds more available to browse at volunteeraberdeen.org.uk and on the ACVO site at acvo.org.uk/opportunities/volunteering

If you have questions about volunteering in Aberdeen or how to involve volunteers with your organisation, contact our Volunteering Services Manager, Mike Melvin at mike.melvin@acvo.org.uk

Union Street Clean Up Volunteers

Our Union Street

Our Union Street is a community-led organisation working to revitalise Aberdeen’s Union Street and has set out how with the support of the public it will regenerate, repopulate and reinvigorate the Granite Mile.

A key part of this is the assistance of volunteers and there are fantastic ways you can get involved and help. This includes brightening the street: getting the street clean then bringing extra colour and interest to it.

Efforts to clean the street will commence with the first Union Street Clean Up Event at St Nicholas Churchyard on the 28th October 2023, between 10am and 3pm. If you can help please register at: https://agcc.typeform.com/to/OIG6359u

You will be part of our unique and exciting new Binky the Sensory Bus Project, who will be traveling throughout Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, providing a much needed sensory environment and safe space for children and young people. This project is a first of its kind in this area and indeed, in Scotland.

The volunteer role includes:
• Helping present our sensory bus and its facilities at social and promotional events
• Talking to the public and raising awareness about the services that we offer at Autism and Neurodiversity North Scotland
• Have an awareness of health and safety within Binky the Sensory Bus and ensure all risk assessments in place are followed.
• Become familiar with A-ND health, safety, and fire regulations, ensuring they are implemented and followed in line with National Care Standards and SSSC Code of Practice.
• Ensure that matters concerning individual children, young people and their families are kept strictly confidential.
• Report any areas of concern or risk to the Team Leader, Services Manager or where appropriate, Chief Executive Officer, in line with out Safeguarding, Adult and Child Protection Procedures.

Volunteer Christmas Elves

Charlie House

Santa is looking for some enthusiastic, fun-loving volunteer Elves to help him in his workshop in Bon Accord Centre Aberdeen this Christmas.

Elves will meet and greet children and their families, check bookings, ensure gifts are ready to be handed out, introduce children to Santa, prepare and take photographs, sell Charlie House merchandise and photo packages, and ensure that the workshop is clean and tidy. There will always to a Chief Elf on hand to keep any mischievous elves in order!

This is a busy and fun role where you will be helping to make special Christmas memories for local families.

You will also be helping to raise funds for Charlie House. The charity was founded in 2011 with the goal of improving quality of life for babies, children and young people in the North-east of Scotland who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and to provide support for their families.
