Volunteer update May 10th – opportunities from Nuart Aberdeen, Social Bite and Asthma and Allergy Foundation

Here are three recent opportunities from Volunteer Aberdeen to help you make a difference and get more involved with your community.

Support the delivery one of Aberdeen’s best known annual events by becoming a festival volunteer with Nuart; create a welcoming space and offer a listening ear by lending a hand with Social Bite’s breakfast club; or give your time in a rewarding volunteer role with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation.

No matter what your interests, skills, age, experience or availability are, there’s a volunteering opportunity suited to you!

There really is no better way to get involved with your community than to give your time and share your skills with your city’s third sector and community organisations. And, if these opportunities don’t suit your interests, don’t worry. There are hundreds more available to browse at volunteeraberdeen.org.uk and on the ACVO site at acvo.org.uk/opportunities/volunteering

Social Bite Breakfast Volunteers

Social Bite (Aberdeen)

Why we need you:

At Social Bite we believe that no one should be hungry, there is enough food and wealth in the city that means we can do something about this. Food is a great way of meeting peoples’ needs as well as offering community, a listening ear, and sign posting people to other services they may need.

What will you be doing?

As part of a team of volunteers and a Social Bite shop staff member, you will be:
• Preparing hot food, drinks, and setting up the shop to offer this take away service.
• Being a friendly face and talking to people about how they are doing.
• ‘Signposting’ people to various services provided by our partner charities e.g. housing/benefits advice, courses, drug/alcohol support.
• Inviting them to Social Suppers.
• Cleaning up after the session has finished.

What support will you be given?

• Induction session with a background to the organisation, role specific training, and information about local services to sign post people towards.
• Regular opportunities to feedback to Volunteer Coordinator.
• Volunteer Calendar of events and Volunteer Bi Monthly Newsletter.
• FLOW Online Food hygiene and healthy & safety training.
• Quarterly refresher training evenings.
• Debrief with on-call staff member when needed. Induction session with a background to the organisation, role specific training, and information about local services to sign post people towards.

What benefits can you expect?

• To be part of a fun and friendly team.
• Satisfaction of seeing vulnerable people benefit from the food and support we provide.
• The chance to develop skills and experience in a major charity/social enterprise, community work and catering.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation Volunteers

Asthma and Allergy Foundation

There are many benefits of volunteering with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation.

By volunteering you will meet new people, improve your cv, learn new skills and utilise your current ones and contribute to a great cause and have a positive impact on your local community. The culture of the organisation is suited to open minded individuals who have the potential to help build on the good work of the team. Volunteering might mean you learn greater detail about asthma and allergies, which will certainly be a rewarding experience that will enhance your life skills and help improve the quality of life of others.

For volunteers with asthma, it could mean using past experiences and turning them into positive ones by helping others through sharing real-life examples of living with asthma and helping other people learn how to manage their symptoms.

All volunteers are welcomed, make a real difference and are greatly appreciated. For more details please contact us at email: info@asthmaandallergy.org.uk or telephone: 01224 973001.
