Volunteer update July 26th – opportunities from Aberdeen Multicultural Centre, Your Love Rara and Shelter

Here are three of the latest opportunities from Volunteer Aberdeen to help you make a difference and get more involved with your community.

Be a part of the city’s biggest cultural celebration as a Aberdeen Mela 2023 Volunteer; support young people’s mental health and wellbeing as a volunteer with Your Love Rara; or engage with your local community whilst tackling homelessness as a Volunteer Shop Assistant with Shelter.

No matter what your interests, skills, age, experience or availability are, there’s a volunteering opportunity suited to you!

There really is no better way to get involved with your community than to give your time and share your skills with your city’s third sector and community organisations. And, if these opportunities don’t suit your interests, don’t worry. There are hundreds more available to browse at volunteeraberdeen.org.uk and on the ACVO site at acvo.org.uk/opportunities/volunteering

If you have questions about volunteering in Aberdeen or how to involve volunteers with your organisation, contact our Volunteering Services Manager, Mike Melvin at mike.melvin@acvo.org.uk

Aberdeen Mela 2023 Volunteers

Aberdeen Multicultural Centre SCIO

This year’s Aberdeen Mela 2023 – One World Day takes place on Sunday, 27 August from 12 noon to 7 pm at Queens Links, Aberdeen Beach Boulevard.

The Aberdeen Mela 2023 is set to be a spectacular celebration of cultural diversity that highlights the rich tapestry of communities in the North East of Scotland. The aim of the event is to promote greater understanding and awareness of different cultures, while showcasing the unique vibrancy of Aberdeen.

There’s something for everyone at this year’s Mela, with a packed program of events that caters to all ages. Attendees can look forward to an array of live music performances from talented artists, as well as captivating dances and other culturally significant acts. In addition to the live entertainment, visitors can explore an extensive selection of food stalls stocked with delicacies from around the world. From spicy curries to sweet treats, street food lovers won’t be able to resist the mouth-watering offerings. Interactive workshops will be available, designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of cultural practices and customs. These workshops provide a perfect opportunity for attendees to engage with different cultures, learn new skills and connect with others.

The success of previous Melas speaks volumes about the popularity of the event, with 13,000 people attending last year’s celebration. This year’s Mela is set to surpass that number, with hopes to welcome over 15,000 attendees. The event promises to be bigger, better, and more diverse than ever before, with additional catering and craft stalls that showcase the cultural heritage of our community.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist at the Aberdeen Mela to help make it a special day for everyone and a highlight of the Aberdeen summer. On the day there are lots of ways you can help including artist liaison, waste management, information points, evaluation and documenting, live social media and the construction and break down of the site.

All help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. It is also the opportunity to be part of a wonderful, major event in Aberdeen. Come be part of the fun!
