Pushing Out the Boat

Volunteer update Feb 8th 2023 – opportunities from British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK & Pushing Out the Boat

Here is your weekly update from Volunteer Aberdeen!

And with that we bring three new fantastic ways to get involved with your local community with some recently added volunteering opportunities.

This week we highlight three diverse volunteer roles; shop volunteers with British Heart Foundation in their Union Street stores; event volunteers for Cancer Research UK’s Aberdeen Race for Life which takes place in July 2023; Public relations/communications volunteer with Pushing Out the Boat to help spread the word about the Aberdeen based magazine and arts from the North East of Scotland.

There really is no better way to get involved with your community than to give your time and share your skills with your city’s third sector and community organisations. And, if these opportunities don’t suit your interests, don’t worry. There are hundreds more available to browse at volunteeraberdeen.org.uk and on the ACVO site at acvo.org.uk/opportunities/volunteering

If you have questions about volunteering in Aberdeen or how to involve volunteers with your organisation, contact our Volunteering Services Manager, Mike Melvin at mike.melvin@acvo.org.uk

On top of building skills and confidence, we also offer a range of benefits to our volunteering team including, 25% discount on donated stock, free breakfast club, free period products, full training, reasonable travel expenses paid, access to our benefits hub to get discounts at local retailers.

Aberdeen Race for Life Volunteers

Cancer Research UK

The spectacular Aberdeen Race for Life takes place on Sunday 2nd July 2023 at Kings Links, Beach Esplanade, Aberdeen.

Our Race for Life events couldn’t happen without volunteers. Whatever time and skills you have to share, we’ve got a great role for you. Just bring your energy, smiles and passion to the party and let’s help beat cancer together. Roles that you can help volunteering in at the event include:

*Course Marshal Volunteer

Cheer on our participants as they take part and lift some spirits along the way. You also ensure their safety and that they’re going in the right direction through the course. Your support will spur them on!

*Enquiries Volunteer

With the excitement of race day there’s bound to be questions! You can help by supporting our participants and spectators with their queries.

*Finish Line Volunteer

You might be asked to help out at our buzzing finish line, where you will hand out water and medals and welcome our participants back with a smile.

*Lead Bike

Lead our fastest runners around the course, showing them the way to a personal best. (Own bike required).

*Water Station

Fuel our runners and walkers at their mid-way point on the course.

Pushing Out the Boat: Team Members – Public Relations

Pushing Out the Boat

Can you raise and maintain awareness of Pushing Out the Boat, the North East’s magazine of new writing and art, throughout the year and help promote our sales? We’re looking for someone to:

1. organise publicity for the calls for submissions to forthcoming issues of our magazine
2. organise publicity for our events including the launch of new issues and the occasional reading events we hold ourselves or contribute to
3. assist with the planning and running of our events
4. run our social media accounts – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
5. draft and issue media releases as required, seek opportunities for publicity in the media, and maintain our database of media contacts
6. draft our twice-yearly newsletter to our database of supporters and friends
7. draft and recommend an annual public relations plan for Pushing Out the Boat
8. review, refresh and add to these activities.
9. attend and contribute to monthly team meetings.

You’ll need some understanding and experience of public relations, and you’ll probably get more out of the role if you’re interested in the arts. We’re a small friendly group based in and around Aberdeen and will help you get up to speed with our current activities and the way we do things.

We meet once a month in the early evening as a team (currently in Ferryhill) to plan our work. We also hold the occasional public reading event and a major launch for each of our new issues, all in the Aberdeen area. We make our own way to these but a lift may be available sometimes. You’ll do much of the work on your own computer but we can supply you with a copy of MS Office if needed.

Excellent support and relevant guidance is provided to all volunteers. Induction with team chair and secretary, and with coordinator (who also fulfils current PR role). Training in our systems (team members’ web site, e-mail, databases, social media accounts) and procedures. Ongoing support from coordinator.

We are a friendly group of volunteers whose meetings and events are held in or near Aberdeen.
