Year 3 Awardee

SOGA athletes mental well being initiative

Type of initiative funded: Group Activity

Funding awarded: £5000

Project description:

We would like to be able to take our athletes to Special Olympic competitions which are held across the country during the year. We have found that doing this gives the athletes a focus for their training and gives them something to look forward to. They really enjoy travelling to the competitions together as a team and meeting up with athletes from other regions with similar disabilities as themselves. We would also like to provide Additional Support Needs training for our instructors and volunteers - this module is not automatically included in the basic coaching qualification to teach athletes but we feel it would enable our instructors and volunteers to understand the athletes needs and challenges much better. We would also like to extend our team kit to those athletes and volunteers who have joined us since we got the grant last year which enabled us to buy the team kit for the rest of the team. Last year we were able to buy soft shell jackets for the team and this year we would love to be able to buy winter-proof ski jackets for their training sessions to give a team feel.
