Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund
Year 1 Awardee
Inclusive Activity Physical
Type of initiative funded: Sport or physical activity
Key priority area: Social isolation and loneliness
Funding awarded: £4737.60
Project description:
We wish to purchase a wide weightlifting bench for use by amputees (and other people who may have physical disabilities or balance issues) to be placed in Aberdeen Sports Village so that they're able to participate safely in a wide range of exercise options alongside non-disabled peers and able to join in with some mainstream group activities. We also wish to offer memberships to the participants so that they can attend in their own time (when it may be more convenient for travel/care services/appointments than the introductory group sessions we've held) and mix with a wider range of people with the hope of improving their confidence, aspirations, social circle and physical/mental health. Partners will include Aberdeen Sports Village, Finding Your Feet Amputee Charity and NHS Grampian. Additionally, to tackle isolation of young people (adults and children) with physical disabilities and visual/hearing impairments, we are hoping to run a Parasport Festival in Aberdeen to re-engage young people with disabilities in physical activity, discover what they're capable of, and allow them to form friendships with others with disabilities.
