Aberdeen Student Show raises a record breaking £167,439.04 for 50 charities across the North East

Reading time: 3 minutes

Aberdeen Student Show took to His Majesty’s Theatre’s stage this April to perform “Seagully Blonde”, their Doric parody of the classic film and musical “Legally Blonde”.

With a production team of 4 and a cast of 44, the cohort rehearsed for 4 weeks before the cast hit the stage, performing 6 performances with 6,924 audience members in attendance. All of this contributed to their unparalleled success made for the chosen 50 local charities that each gain an incredible share of the money raised.

This production marked the 104th year of the Aberdonian tradition however Aberdeen Student Show have never managed to raise over £160,000 until now.

The money was split between 4 levels of donations (Wee funds, Bronze, Silver and Gold) and each charity was designated a level for the year. The total that each level received was:

  • Wee Funds – £500
  • Bronze – £2,248.78
  • Silver – £4,497.56
  • Gold – £10,000

Gavin McKay, local primary school teacher, who doubled as the director of this spectacular production, said when asked about this phenomenal total: “Absolutely over the moon with the total for this year’s Student Show. We can’t thank the North East audience enough for coming and supporting the show and all our wonderful charities.

Seagully Blonde was a huge success performed to over 6000 people. The cast were dedicated and enthusiastic which led to such a brilliant show.”

This year’s Administration Sam Allan, who recently graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a degree in English and Film, couldn’t be prouder of everyone’s fundraising efforts: “Aberdeen Student Show is a student experience like no other. I can’t quite believe it, but we are absolutely delighted to have raised over £167,000 for fifty local charities. Not only is this an outstanding total but to have broken the society fundraising record by more than £10,000 is the cherry on top of a very successful year at the society.

“Every penny raised and every pound donated is a testament to the faith that Aberdeen holds in this century old student tradition. Student Show has always had the ability to extend beyond Aberdeen’s student community, It has always been a privilege to be involved in the Students’ Show but this year has been a particularly special one, we’ve been able to raise over £160,000 alongside our very best friends, how lucky are we!”

All this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible business sponsorships that graciously donate money towards the making and running of the show so that every penny raised during the run can go directly towards the chosen charities.

Apache has been the Student’s Show’s ‘Title’ Sponsor for the last 3 years through the offshore bond committee which distributes funds raised by the sale of confectionary and other products on its North Sea platforms.

Pauline Fraser, Apache U.K senior communications and bond member, said: “Our offshore bond committee has supported the Aberdeen Student Show from 2022 and every year we are so impressed with the passion, creativity and determination of the young people who organise and produce this Aberdeen institution. The donation from the workforce on our North Sea platforms ensures that more charities in our region can benefit, therefore the students must be commended for raising such an incredible amount, which will make a remarkable difference to the lives of many in the city and shire.

“As a company, we are driven to elevate the communities where we operate to support future generations and this aligns perfectly with the Student Show, which is an outstanding demonstration of how creativity drives impact.”

Aberdeen Student Show will once again return to His Majesty’s Theatre on the 22nd – 25th of April 2026 with their annual charity production, with hopes that for the 5th time they can raise even more money for local charities. More information to be released soon.
