Hours: 12 hours per week

Contract: Fixed-term for 12 months initially, with the possibility of extension subject to funding.

Salary: £16.00 per hour

Help shape community life in Dyce and Stoneywood

Dyce & Stoneywood Community Association is looking for a passionate and community-minded Community Support & Development Worker to help strengthen and grow one of Aberdeen’s most established community programmes.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, supporting volunteers and developing activities that bring communities together. You’ll play a key role in helping the Association build on its successful programme of wellbeing, social and educational activities while responding to the changing needs of local people.

Working closely with volunteers, community groups and the Management Committee, you’ll help develop new opportunities, support existing activities across Dyce Community Centre and local sheltered housing, and increase community engagement through communications and social media.

About the role

The Association has been run by a Volunteer Management Committee for over 14 years. The current programme reflects the higher than average number of older adults in the community and has been developed in response to local people’s needs. Volunteers are at the heart of everything the Association does.

The Association’s goal is to create a welcoming community where people can improve their mental health and wellbeing, reduce loneliness and isolation, and enjoy educational, recreational and social opportunities.

Alongside supporting the existing programme in Dyce Community Centre and local sheltered housing, this role will help develop a sustainable programme that continues to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Role responsibilities

The Community Support & Development Worker will:

• Manage, develop and support a sustainable programme to meet the needs of the community both in the Centre and at local sheltered housing.
• Establish and support social media for the Association.
• Act as Clerk to the Management Committee, preparing reports and supporting Committee members.
• Support and guide the many volunteers involved in the Association, while recruiting new volunteers as required.
• Familiarise themselves with existing community groups and their volunteers, while establishing links with other professionals working in the area.
• Be prepared to work flexible hours.

Essential criteria

• Relevant qualifications and/or experience in working with people in community settings.
• Experience in working with and developing good relationships with volunteers.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to establish and use social media for the Association.
• Ability to work on own initiative and with colleagues.
• Experience of maintaining records and preparing reports.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect at all times.
• Eligibility for registration for Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG).
• Be prepared to work flexible hours.

Desirable criteria

• Having local knowledge.

About Dyce & Stoneywood Community Association

Dyce & Stoneywood Community Association is an independent voluntary organisation and registered Scottish charity dedicated to improving the lives of people across Dyce and Stoneywood.

The Association works in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, NHS Grampian and other local organisations to deliver a wide range of educational, recreational and wellbeing activities for the community. Its volunteer-led programme includes more than 20 regular groups and classes, outreach activities in local sheltered housing through the EncourAGE programme, community outings, walking groups, the Men’s Shed, Lunch Club, fitness activities and the operation of a community minibus.

Around 70–80 volunteers help make these activities possible every year, creating opportunities for friendship, learning and healthier, more connected lives.
