Sunnybank Community Centre have always had a multicultural community of users and one of our core classes is Adult English language. We will support minority ethnic families, lone parents and young refugees, with little or no English skills, facing socio-economic disadvantage. Our classes help them to improve their English skills, and in doing so integrate into our community. By improving their English skills, our students can go out of their homes on their own (specially women), speak to locals and make new friends instead of closing themselves in their own culture bubble. We encourage them to socialise between themselves outside classes, speak to other parents and help their children settle in with their school work. We also have classes to support them applying to jobs. They feel more confident and empowered, improving mental health and wellbeing.
