This month, we shine a spotlight on the impactful work of Silver City Surfers. At free drop-in sessions across Aberdeen, the charity is helping people build confidence and skills with a wide range of standard, everyday technology. Adrianne, Coordinator, and Paul, volunteer tutor, encourage anyone to come along if they need assistance with anything technological – from learning the basics of using a device, to helping stay in touch with friends and family through using video call – and feel more connected, confident and independent.
Alistair Gilmore, volunteer Pilot and Ambassador at Cycling Without Age Scotland, shares his experience giving his time to the charity. The organisation helps people with limited mobility to experience rides on specially adapted Trishaw bikes and Wheelchair Transporters. For Alistair, volunteering is a meaningful way to stay active, meet new people and give back to the community.
In our latest Why I Volunteer in Aberdeen films, volunteers from Befriend a Child sit down and explain what inspired them to get involved, what volunteering means to them and the difference they believe giving time can make. Lesley, intandem programme mentor, and Michaela, youth club volunteer, play an important role in helping children and young people feel valued, and they encourage anyone to give their time to make a difference too.
Continuing the volunteering news, our Volunteering Services Manager Mike Melvin highlights his visit to award Frazier Allen the Bon Accord Award where he was recognised for his DJing efforts at Boogie in the Bar sessions across Aberdeen. He states the importance of volunteers like Frazier, and why the Lord Provost Volunteering Certificate is the perfect opportunity to thank people who give their time to communities.
Other highlights from September’s ACVO News include:
- The Bridie O’Connor Hall Officially Opens at Inchgarth Community Centre, marking a significant milestone for one of Aberdeen’s busiest and most well used community centres.
- Now in its 12th year, NESCAN Hub alongside partners and sponsors encourage everyone to join in with Climate Week North East (CWNE) – a two-week programme running from Saturday, 19 September to Sunday, 4 October 2026.
- CFINE expands access with newly renovated Pantry+, providing families with healthy food, toiletries and baby products at a low cost.
