Aberdeen Science Centre has partnered with Aberdeen Lynx to encourage visitors to discover more about one of the world’s most exciting sports – ice hockey.

The centre is collaborating with the North-east’s leading ice hockey team, based at Aberdeen’s Linx Ice Arena, to bring the fast-paced sport to life for new audiences, and explore the science that makes it possible, through an exciting weekend packed with hands-on activities.

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th January, Aberdeen Science Centre will host The Science of Ice Hockey, which is set to feature fun for all members of the family, including interactive science experiments, storytelling sessions and live demonstrations that delve into the physics, forces and technology behind the game.

As part of this, the Hockey on the Spot show will showcase the science of ice and fun experiments that reveal how acceleration, friction and Newton’s Laws of Motion all play a central role in the world of ice hockey.

Show and tell stations around the centre will allow visitors to get hands-on with ice hockey equipment, learn fun hockey facts, design a mascot and more.

Younger visitors can enjoy a special ‘Dino Hockey’ storytelling session, offering a playful and educational look at the sport.

All activities featured in The Science of Ice Hockey weekend, which are suitable for both ice hockey fans and those new to the sport, are included as part of standard admission prices to Aberdeen Science Centre.

Visitors are encouraged to book online to avoid disappointment.

Calli Buchanan, visitor experience manager at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “Aberdeen has been no stranger to ice lately, but we are aiming to showcase the fun and excitement of ice hockey in a way that everyone can enjoy, whether they are a lifelong fan or discovering the sport for the first time.

“Our Science of Ice Hockey weekend will demonstrate how science, teamwork and skill come together on the ice to create a fun and entertaining sport that is beloved around the world.”

As part of the collaboration, Aberdeen Lynx players and season ticket holders can also receive a 10% discount on entry to Aberdeen Science Centre. Season tickets or player verification must be presented to the centre’s staff upon entry for the discount to be granted.

The centre also recently supported the Aberdeen Lynx team’s recent Teddy Toss event, with Aberdeen Science Centre’s science communicators bringing hands-on science activities directly to ice hockey fans at the Linx Ice Arena.

Based on Constitution Street near Aberdeen beach, Aberdeen Science Centre is home to almost 65 interactive exhibits, allowing people of all ages to discover topics including Space, Energy, Life Sciences, Engineering, and much more.
