Diversity Bridge SCIO has concluded 2025 with the successful delivery of its Welcome Table Initiative, a festive community gathering designed to promote connection, dignity and belonging for New Scots living in Aberdeen.
Held in the heart of the city, the event brought together over 125 New Scots, alongside volunteers, a representative from the local business community, Police Scotland, and a community entertainer. Families and individuals — many of whom have arrived in Scotland fleeing persecution, conflict, or instability — were welcomed into a safe and inclusive space where they could connect, share food, and experience a sense of community during the festive period.
As part of the event, attendees also benefited from the Choice and Dignity: Aberdeen Gift Card Initiative, enabling individuals and families facing financial hardship to choose what they needed most at a time when financial pressures are often at their highest. The initiative was made possible through a £2,500 grant from the Trades Widows Fund Charity, whose support ensured that dignity and choice remained central to the response.
Edward Obi, Founder of Diversity Bridge SCIO, said: “The Welcome Table was about more than a festive gathering — it was about restoring dignity, building trust, and reminding people that they belong. Many of the families we supported have endured unimaginable journeys.
“To sit together, share warmth, and offer choice at such a critical time of year reflects the values at the very heart of Diversity Bridge.”
A guest representative attending the event added: “What stood out was the atmosphere — it wasn’t transactional or tokenistic. It was human, respectful, and genuinely welcoming. This is what community cohesion looks like in practice.”
One New Scot attendee shared their experience: “This was the first time since arriving in Scotland that I felt truly seen. The support, the kindness, and being able to choose what my family needed most meant more than words can say.”
The Welcome Table Initiative forms part of Diversity Bridge SCIO’s wider mission to remove barriers, tackle inequality, and build bridges between communities through people-centred, dignity-led programmes. The charity works closely with partners across the voluntary, public and private sectors to ensure support reaches those who need it most.
