International Volunteer Day 2025

December 5th brought the annual recognition of of those who give their time to make a big impact within their communities – International Volunteer Day . Led by the United Nations to acknowledge the huge contribution volunteers make locally, nationally and globally. This year’s theme, “Every Contribution Matters,” was timely and significant as it marks the start of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026).

IVY 2026 will focus on strengthening the role of volunteering in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It’s an important reminder that the actions of volunteers – no matter the scale – are essential in building stronger, fairer and more resilient communities.

Home-Start Aberdeen’s New Charity Shop Opens on George Street

This month also brought a fantastic milestone for Home-Start Aberdeen with the opening of their new charity shop on George Street. The transformation of the former Santander building into a warm, welcoming space has been a tremendous community effort, and, crucially, one powered by volunteers. Long-standing volunteer Sheila Murray, who has supported the charity for 21 years, had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the launch, a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the day Volunteers were involved at every stage, from refurbishing the shop to preparing stock and welcoming customers during the opening week. Their commitment has helped create a space that will generate vital funds for Home-Start’s work with families across Aberdeen. It’s a fantastic reminder of how central volunteers are in enabling local organisations to thrive, and I’m delighted to celebrate their tremendous contribution.

International Volunteer Managers Day – Recognising the People Who Support Volunteers

Last month we also marked International Volunteer Managers Day on 5th November. The 2025 theme, “Be BOLD. Make Change,” highlighted the leadership and commitment shown by volunteer managers across the sector.

Volunteer managers ensure volunteers feel supported, confident, and able to make the impact they want to make. They are key to ensuring volunteering works well for everyone involved, and I’m pleased that ACVO was able to recognise this important role at our dedicated event.

It was amazing to bring all the familiar faces from our local sector together to hear from each other and share ideas over a cup of tea and I look forward to the opportunity bringing you all together again in 2026.

And of course, thank you to everyone working behind the scenes to make volunteering successful and accessible across Aberdeen!

A Look Back at 2025 – A Positive Year for Volunteering

As this is the final update of the year, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the positive developments we’ve seen across Aberdeen.

One of the most encouraging has been the rise in student volunteering. Young people from schools, colleges, and universities have shown real enthusiasm, contributing their time while gaining skills, confidence and recognition through initiatives like the Saltire Awards. Strengthening our links with education partners has been a priority, and it’s been great to see more young people getting involved.

We’ve also seen encouraging trends in adult volunteering. The Scottish Household Survey 2024 reported that 30% of Aberdeen’s adult population took part in formal volunteering – a significant rise and above the national average. When informal volunteering is included, this increases to 51%, showing a strong commitment to community involvement across Aberdeen.

Whether people volunteered for a short-term role, at a one-off event, or through ongoing support for a local organisation, the impact has been clear.

Highlights From Across the Year

Earlier in the summer, Volunteers’ Week 2025 provided an excellent opportunity to thank volunteers directly. It was a pleasure to join ACVO colleagues, partner organisations and the Lord Provost in recognising the difference volunteers make every day. The national campaign also had a huge reach, helping shine a light on the value of volunteering right across the country.

Events throughout the year – from local community activities to large scale city wide celebrations like Tall Ships Aberdeen – have shown how central volunteers are to Aberdeen’s success. Volunteers continue to be relied upon by charities, community groups and initiatives of all sizes. Their contribution ensures vital services can continue, and new opportunities can develop.

As we celebrate International Volunteer Day and prepare for the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, the message is clear: volunteering continues to grow and its impact is significant.
