Assistant Retail Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and develop our retail operations to maximise support for our charity. The Assistant Manager reports to the Shop Manager of Somebody Cares based at Denmore Road, Aberdeen. Working in partnership with the Shop Manager to achieve sales targets whilst ensuring efficiency, effective management of staff and volunteers, optimising our shop layout and stock to provide a high quality retail outlet, whilst ensuring the health, safety and security of staff, customers and our premises at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff Management – Supervise, train and support employees to maximise stock control, quality, and displays. Manage donation drop offs to the store with staff sorting and converting the donated items to the shop floor as efficiently as possible. Ensuring all workers are aware of and encouraged to work towards shop targets. Compile staff and volunteer rotas to ensure adequate coverage within the store at all times.
- Volunteer Management – To train, support and supervise the work of the volunteers in Denmore Road, encouraging an active interest in the shop and the work of Somebody Cares
- Operational Duties – ensure that the retail premises and all stock is displayed to maximise revenue. Act as a keyholder to open and close shop, ensure security of premises and respond to emergency call out if required. Ensure that stock items are priced in accordance to fair market value and arranging sales or promotions to maximise footfall in the store. Deputising for store manager in their absence.
- Financial Management – to be aware of sales targets and maximise shop and other retail income to achieve these. Completion of daily banking and cash processes.
- Health and Safety – To maintain safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Process Management – To ensure that the Quality Management System is implemented, maintained and audited on a regular basis. Ensure that all staff and volunteers are aware of company process and procedures and training needs identified.
- Communication and Reporting – Attendance at relevant meetings with management and responsible for cascading information to team as appropriate.
- Branding – publicise Denmore Road and enhance the image of Somebody Cares SCIO and incorporate all aspects of the organisation’s work at regular intervals on visual displays around Denmore Road.
- Customer Focus – provide excellent customer care through quality of service, deal with any conflict efficiently and effectively. Be an ambassador for Somebody Cares Scotland and the work that it does.
You may be required to help out or undertake activities across the business as required. This job description is not exhaustive and other duties may be required in line with operational needs.
Required Skills
Essential
- Demonstrable experience of working in a retail environment or similar customer focused environment.
- Experience of managing or supervising a team, approachable demeanor with proven customer service skills.
- Able to think on their feet and problem solve
- Effective time management skills
- Experience in pricing, selling and merchandising goods.
- Excellent communication skills, shares knowledge, ideas and collaborates with others.
- Good admin and IT literacy skills
Preferable
- Experience of Quality Management systems.
- Competence or a flair for merchandising and displaying stock to maximise impact and revenue.
Other Info
Currently the store is open Mon – Friday (9:30am – 4.30pm), Saturday (10.00am – 4:30pm) throughout the year apart from 25th and 26th December and 1st and 2nd January.
This is a permanent role full time role. Contracted hours are 8.30am – 4.30pm (40 hours each week), with 30 minutes (paid) for lunch. You are required to work five days each week, our working week consists of Monday to Saturday. Some flexibility in the working hours will be required from time to time. The annual leave entitlement is 28 working days, which includes all local public and bank holidays, given in lieu if required to work on these days. We operate a staff discount scheme on all (non-sale) items.
